Masdar city -Driverless taxis : Prt “personal rapid transit in Abu dhabi

personal rapid transit in Abu dhabiAbu dhabi is planning a Prt “personal rapid transit”. driverless taxis that run on electricity and could hit the streets of Masdar as early as this year.

Built by Systematica,, the PRT system will help keep Masdar (a planned city in Abu Dhabi) completely car-free. The PRT vehicles will travel at speeds of approximately 7 meters per second, with the longest routes in the city being perhaps 2.5 km. So let’s say you reach a station, wait maybe 1.5 minutes for your car to arrive, travel for 5 minutes if your destination is relatively far away, and then exit the station, which will take around a minute. So the longest trips in the city will be around 7, perhaps 10 minutes long. Riders will pay about the same price they'd normally drop on an equivalent taxi ride.

In Masdar, where the streets will be entirely free of automobiles, a network of these compact electric taxis will provide clean and quiet transportation to the city’s residents, as well as commuters. The first PRT cars are set to begin running later this year

In addition to PRT, A light rail line will run through Masdar, most likely running between Abu Dhabi's international airport and the city center, some 20 km away. Although no cars will be allowed into Masdar City, nine multi-story parking lots will be scattered along its perimeter. Residents, commuters, visitors and buses will all have dedicated parking spots there, allowing them to own and use cars outside the city walls read more

Abu Dhabi wants stake in Emirates for bailout cash

According to The Times, Abu Dhabi is demanding control of Emirates in return for a multi billion dollar bailout:

"The emirate, which is ruled by the Al Maktoum family, has been hit hard by the credit crunch. Its property market, in which many of the big players are state-owned or backed, has enjoyed explosive growth over the last decade but prices are now tumbling, leaving heavily indebted developers badly exposed.

"Government sources in Dubai confirmed last week that talks had begun with Abu Dhabi, which has huge oil and gas reserves, about funding. Rather than ploughing cash into the Dubai state, Abu Dhabi has offered to invest in its neighbour’s strategic assets.

"The airline alone is estimated to be worth about £10 billion and selling a stake in it could generate enough cash to prop up much of Dubai’s economy."

Etihad already bills itself as "the national airline of the UAE".

Surf the internet for free while enjoying the park in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Residents can enjoy free wireless internet connectivity in two public parks on the corniche within a month, thanks to a new initiative of Abu Dhabi Municipality, a senior official told Gulf News on Sunday.

"We are trying to complete the preparations in co-operation with etisalat to introduce internet connectivity within one month," said Abdul Aziz Al Jeraishi, Director of Public Parks and Recreation Department at Abu Dhabi Municipality.

"Initially, the connectivity will be available in two public parks on the corniche - Musical Park and Official Park." The connectivity will be available round the clock, said the official. "The entry is free to those two parks, so people can enjoy free browsing.

"If successful, we will gradually extend the service to other parks in the capital," said Al Jeraishi.

Abu Dhabi :Barbican TURBO to host Team Orange, Stars of 'The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift', for the ultimate drifting experience

Reaffirming its status as the must-attend auto and custom car meet, the organizers of Barbican TURBO have confirmed that Team Orange will be headlining at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre between the 13th and 15th November.

A first for Middle East audiences, Team Orange will be performing their most outrageous drifting stunts and feats over the three day event in their signature orange-striped 450bhp Subarus Impreza GBDs.

Hailing from Fukushima, Japan, Team Orange are one of the world's top drifting teams; they are household names in Asia and the US thanks to their driving displays on the big screen in films such as The Fast & The Furious Tokyo Drift.

Crowned 2006 D1 Grand Prix series champion, Japan's leading car drifting series, Team Orange's lead driver Nobushige Kumakubo will be driving bumper to bumper as he and his teammates show off their skills during twin-drift, or tsuiou, races

Kumakubo will be joined by fellow Team Orange driver Kazuhiro Tanaka at Barbican TURBO.

One of the founding drivers of the D1 Grand Prix series, Tanaka is considered one of the most skilful drifting drivers on the Japanese circuit and was ranked sixth over the 2006 D1 Grand Prix season.

In addition to Team Orange's world class driving displays, visitors will be able to review the latest in styling, performance products, audio/visual displays, screaming engines and smoking tyres!

For the first time in the Middle East enthusiasts will have the chance to see if their own motors can match up to those of the pros, with the 'Top 100' and 'Dyno Shoot Out' competitions.

Debuting at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre between 13th and 15th of November 2008 Barbican Turbo, the first custom car meet in the region, is expected to attract thousands of car enthusiasts from across the Middle East.
