Students Take Space Photos With nikon coolpix camera and balloons


Teenagers equipped with $80 digicam (held by a $60 latex balloon) and latex balloon have managed to take stunning pictures of space from 20-miles above Earth. Meteotek team, a teacher and his four students from the IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Spain.

They wanted to launch a balloon with a digital camera and some custom-built electronic sensors to 30,000 feet but for their surprize the $80 Nikon digital camera soared to 100,000 feet at that time the balloon lost it's inflation and fell to ground, the team was able to track its progress using Google Earth via the craft's on-board radio receiver.Team leader Gerard Marull, 18, said: "We were overwhelmed at our results, especially the photographs, to send our handmade craft to the edge of space is incredible."
"The balloon we chose was inflated with helium to just over two metres and weighed just 1500 grams," said Gerard. "It was able to carry the sensor equipment and digital Nikon camera which weighed 1.5kg"
